Trump Warns India of Tariff Increase
“They do trade. And we can raise tariffs on them very quickly, and it would be very bad for them,” Trump stated while speaking aboard Air Force One.
The president’s remarks followed comments from Senator Lindsey Graham, who highlighted that India had already cut back significantly on its oil imports from Russia after Washington imposed tariffs.
“I really do believe that what he [Donald Trump] did with India is the chief reason India is now buying substantially less Russian oil,” Graham told journalists. The senator is also working on legislation that would enable further sanctions against countries maintaining trade relations with Russia.
Graham recalled a recent visit to the Indian ambassador’s residence, noting, “All he wanted to talk about is how they’re buying less Russian oil. ‘Would you tell the president to relieve the tariff?’ This stuff works. So, I’m hoping we’ll bring the bill up,” he explained to reporters aboard Air Force One on Sunday.
India, which ranks as the world’s third-largest consumer of oil, had become a major destination for Russian crude following the intensification of the Ukraine conflict in 2022.
