Flash Floods, Rains Leave Over Seventy Dead in Pakistan, India
Since June 26, at least 63 lives have been claimed and over 100 individuals have sustained injuries in rain-related incidents across Pakistan, according to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA).
In its most recent report, the NDMA confirmed that another six fatalities were recorded, with 14 more people injured in the last 24 hours.
The breakdown of fatalities includes 21 in Punjab, including 11 children; 22 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, with 10 children and 5 women among the victims; 15 in Sindh; and five in Balochistan.
The heavy rains have not only resulted in lives lost but also inflicted widespread damage to infrastructure, especially in areas prone to flooding. Transportation systems have also been disrupted, particularly in low-lying and high-risk zones. Authorities warned that scattered rains are expected to continue in the coming days.
In neighboring India, the death toll from flash floods and cloudbursts in Himachal Pradesh has risen to 10, with 34 people still missing, according to a statement from the Emergency Operations Centre.
The statement further disclosed that more than 350 people had been rescued in the past 32 hours, as the region endured 16 cloudbursts and three flash floods.
The monsoon season, which typically spans from June to September in both Pakistan and India, continues to bring devastating weather conditions across the subcontinent.
